Cmy memories of that place ,the patients were cared for but some were very hard to care for they could and would have killed you sad place .people who dissapeared are prob buried on the grounds

Spent many weekends up the hill at the cemetery ,flowers tydy up with aunty lil then and many walks thru the hospital grounds,never found it creepy or spooky ,thru the child’s eyes and no creep stories from the adults. Perhaps why I ended up working as an adult years latter at sunny side hospital in ch ch for many years and loved it

It served its purpose for those who needed help back then. It Was a good asset for the region. Sure nursing and mental health work practices have changed immensely over the years like everything else (as one would expect). It’s a shame it’s ended that way…

Does anyone know which building/villa this was at Seaview? When I was at high school in late 1960's in Hokitika. I spent a Summer holidays working there helping with painting roofs of the villas.

Played many games of hockey back in 1970s, remember the inmates coming to watch and cheer for ? so sad to see it up flames, came from good old harihari cheers Lena

also the cemetery next to the asylum amazing really road going passed all of those buildings
to next hill
