DescriptionThe Rewanui ,Liverpool No. 2 Coal Mine was destroyed in 2024 by a huge landslide. The seven mile creek which was dammed by the huge rocks is now unearthing many of the original equipment used at the middle brake mine as flood waters sluice the mud and smaller rocks down stream. A large steel sprocket wheel now takes pride of place perched on a rock in the creek. Not sure which location it was, but I remember going up rewanui for a hunt in the 1990’s, walked all the way up the road (on the right hand side if you’re facing east) and then it crossed over to the left hand side, was an old office of some sort, deer prints all through the building ? Makes me sad that my kids will never know the freedom and history that we did ? And I’m only 46 ??

Craig Smith was a special place then.i remember a workshop still with old forged tools hanging on the walls and massive belt drives and pulleys.

My father ,Jack Guy ran the power house and drove the man hauler at the middle brake .Every 3rd week he would on sunday afternoon walk up to Rewanui from dunollie with his fireman to get the power house ready for the dog watch to start at midnight. sometimes i would go to work with him and fill in the time to the midnight shift shooting opossums for the tokens. I would sleep in the ambulance room and we would catch the train back in the morning dad to bed me to high school. The fireman would rake the boiler fire and stoke the fire to heat the bathhouse. In those days 2 huge compressors electric driven, compressed air to run the pumps in the mine as it was a gassy mine anything that could cause a fire or spark was banned. That was the days when you could take your kids to work with you not allowed now. was about 1955 to 1960 had a few trips to dads work.

The enquiry and coroners report makes interesting reading, and would not be accepted by today’s H and S standards .
