AddBy: William Gray14th Aug 2025 12:23PMFurther information regarding the stranding of the Union Co,s SS TAVIUNI at Westport, she ran ashore at the South Spit on April the 23rd 1908 while inbound from Nelson. The heavy swell at the time pushed the vessel well up the beach, and ended up high and dry. And was refloated on the 25th of November 1908, the NAVIUNI was launched through the Tip Head, the same way as the MAPOURIKA was launched into the Grey river here after her stranding on North Beach in October 19th in October 1908. The TAVINUI was designed to carry 32 saloon and 28 Second Class Passengers. The TAVINUI later sank in Darling Harbour after a collision with a French Ship the NERA, but was refloated and scuttled off Sydney in May 1931.
