Gosh, heaps of return trips Greymouth to ChCh. I remember some breakdowns and late arrivals home waiting at Cass for a repair or waiting for NZRS Buses to get back to Greymouth. Stopping at Otira for a cuppa and a pie (they were the best in the day) Don’t know who made them. And many trips between Greymouth and Ross. Jimmi Grant Senior often the driver. Good old days. Great fun. Happy memories.

Dad was a guard on the railcard and enforced the no-drinking rule… company policy. Confiscations meant a decent Xmas party for the guards. There were ways around it, such as lacing a Fanta bottle with vodka

Wow been on the trains and railcars so many times to Christchurch, Oamaru and Dunedin for school holidays at least twice a year plus other places in NZ. My dad was a Road Services driver and therefore our trips were free. All the guards knew us and many times we would hear the guard at changeover say " Shorty Allan's kids are on board . Look after them ". We saw NZ for free. I am still train crazy. My dad was the last Road Services manager in Westport. When he had a break from the buses he was Stationmaster at Granity.
