The Kaniere gold dredge at Kumara.
After decades of gold mining enabling economic growth and employment throughout the West Coast the gold dredge tailings now produce a new economy from the old wastelands. The Kaniere gold dredge commenced operations in 1938 at Kaniere. It was rebuilt near Kumara to work the nearby Taramakau River in the late 1950s. Hemi Mason ditto Hemi. Was a welder on that working along side of Mr Maitland on day shift. Travelling up and back each day in the company van. Find memories mate.

It was tough going planting the pines on the Taramakau dredge tailings in the early to mid 80’s. Had to carry soil in to put in the holes, before planting the trees - from memory. Grey Forestry gangs

It’ll take many rotations of pines to re-establish a healthy topsoil. Trees don’t like growing on stones!
