Gordy Ladner (ex Cornish tin miner and progenitor of several NZ sports stars) took his family up to "The Alec" from Waiuta. The Bolithos recount that Arthur Ladner was the only boy who could kick a rugby ball higher than the trees.

The Bolitho's book on the Reefton School of Mines has a section on "The Alec." The whole book well worth a read.

Mine owned by the Mcvicar family. Doug Robertson told me the quartz veins were like a string of sausages varying in width significantly. The remains of the ablution blockwere still evident in the early 70’s on the Alexander River terrace.
