DescriptionThis photo shows Seddon Street Kumara in 1880 taken from Main Street (now Greenstone Road) heading towards the east. Buildings on the left are: The partially obscured Albion Hotel, on the corner of Main and Seddon Streets; Greymouth Hotel, Mrs. Ritson’s 1879 to 1886; Patterson Brothers General Store; J. Hannah, Watchmaker and Jeweller; Berlin House, D. Davidson and Coy, Boot and Shoe Importers. This firm was closing down at this time and you can see the ‘Great Final Sale’ sign on the verandah; Unknown Importer; Barber; Unknown; John Davies Military and Merchant Tailor. Further down the Street can be seen a large ‘padlock’ hanging outside a premises. This is the ‘Sign of The Golden Padlock’, the premises of Campbell and Kettles, Ironmongers.
On the right side: Partly obscured, James Drummond’s Post Office Store; W Kirkpatrick, Clothier; Obscured behind Kirkpatrick’s veranda is Gilbert Stewart’s Hotel; H. Burger, Tobacconist, (later was a Fruiterer and Seedsman); Bank of New South Wales; Seebeck’s Billiard Saloon; Unknown; Unknown; Unknown; The Town Hall, which is the taller building with the Flagpole. It's hard to believe that Kumara main street ever looked like that

No wonder Seddon tried every trick in the book to get the main rail line to Christchurch going thru Kumara and Greenstone. Prosperous towns in their time.

It’s an awesome photo capturing the prosperity of those gold mining towns from the past. I wonder how the sense of community would have been then?
