DescriptionWest Coasters have always had this historic view but what lies behind the three grand mountain peaks that feed the Franz and Fox glaciers to their west. Mount Cook, Tasman and the Minarets create the Tasman Glacier on their eastern side which is 23 Km's in length and has a thickness of 600 metres deep.
There have been over 240 recorded deaths in and around Aoraki /Mount Cook since 1907, with causes including avalanches, rockfalls, hypothermia, and plane crashes. While some climbers survive climbs, others are never found. The mountain is considered technically difficult, attracting many climbers but also posing significant risks from its height, terrain, and unpredictable weather.ContributorTony Kokshoorn
