I remember all the Greymouth Doctors and had private and business dealings with them all - except Dr Logan who passed away quite early. His daughter Judith was our postie for a while. Dr Ray was the Police Doctor. On early morning Police Patrol I used to be quite impressed at Dr Nixon and his early morning house calls which could start before 6am. In the 50's, 60's and 70's Greymouth was most fortunate to have good experienced Doctors and good surgical backup at the Grey Hospital.

I remember 4 of the Doctors, firstly Dr W A Bird, about 1938/9, ( aged 5 ) then Dr.Logan, Dr Nixon, then Dr Ray who delivered my two sons. Dr. Billy Bird was my family Dr in Christchurch until he retired.

Dr Nixon was the first person I ever met, and I mooned him ( butt first breech) he was getting ready for a C-section, but my mum who was still very strong from her athletic days wasn't having any of that and popped me out second push. Good job mum. And after mooning him, the second thing I did was a massive pee all over poor Dr Nixon. Sorry Doc. That was 1976. I read that he passed away aged 66 in 1980.
I'd like to think I was one of his more memorable deliveries

Mum had Dr. Logan as a family doctor. When I cut my foot everyone thought I had polio but Dr. Logan knew that the poison could have gone up to my kidney. Right! I was in Greymouth Hospital for a month! Nephritis wasn't fun.
