I was in Archives a few weeks ago looking up the file on this bridge. NZR built it and details are in their file (Bridge 20). Once mining was focussed on Liverpool 3, they no longer wanted responsibility so tried to sell it to State Mines. SM weren't all that keen, and eventually the bridge (with right of access) was sold to two private parties. Attached sketch is from a 1930 bridge inspector's report.

If that's the bridge I think it is, I drove the work ute over it in maybe 98 or 99 to work on a loader for Sandvik

The late Bill Closs told me he was working at Rewanui when the 29 quake struck… there. Was a small shake in the morning followed by the big one. For a start they thought it was caused by the mountain moving because it had been ‘on the creep’ for a long time. But they all rushed out except for two old blokes who were very deaf.
So someone went back in to tell them it was a quake. Meantime they’d been taking advantage of all the coal that’d come down.

I remember it being renovated with new decking etc in the 1960s so it's not exactly the original bridge....amazing how quickly wood rots out in those damp valleys.
