THE ONE WE HOOKED,
BUT GOT AWAY.
After 9 years of lobbying the Government for the Dobson hydro dam, against the odds approval was granted for a scheme costing 185 million dollars in 2008. It would generate enough power for 27,000 homes. Publicly listed company Trust Power which is now owned by the huge Contact Energy Ltd. was consented to build the hydro scheme within 10 years. All the land needed was purchased to complete the project and an international white water canoe slalom course in rapids was included in the plan.
After all the expense and hard work, Trust Power later decided not to proceed with the project.Map^[1]ContributorTony Kokshoorn

It's really a shame that they planned it, got the consent for it, and then finally abandoned it.....
My own view of the matter would be that, since it's just not reasonable to have to depend on North Island companies (and partisan governments) that can promise rainbows, but then just walk away and disappear into thin air without so much as an adequate explanation,
Then it would really behoove the four West Coast councils and communities to come together as an independent and unified Province, in order to take control of its own resources, and develop everything that would be necessary for the life, liberty and happiness of all West Coasters..... including taking ownership and control of all schools, hospitals, electricity production and distribution, minerals and resource royalties and revenue, and so on.....
And the reason for all that would be simply, Why not? It's our own West Coast after all....

This would have been the greatest thing for the Coast and helping Nelson and Marlborough, believe that the Greens once again had a finger in it's demise.
NOTE it was actually fully consented and the power company chose to not proceed - Admin
