I remember when he was appointed late 1962 , all the schools were lined up on the 'rec ground next to the High School , it was really hot and I recall little kids keeling over . Because he was patron to all the youth movements , the Scouts, Cubs, Guides, Brownies and the Boys and Girl's Brigades were herded into the Army Drill Hall to be addressed a second time . It was stifling in there and the ' Official Party ' was late . Sir Bernie made joke about wearing a monocle so that ' people that wanted to spit in his eye only had the one to aim at ... '
