OFFICIAL OPENING.
WESTLAND RECREATION CENTRE.
Planning for the new Stadium started in 2010, we formed the West Coast Recreation Trust to fundraise the 11 million dollar Westland Recreation Centre. The goal of the trust was for Council to construct the two court stadium without any direct ratepayer contributions. It was a huge ask and has not happened anywhere else in New Zealand for a Council owned complex. We wanted the Stadium to serve as a post disaster emergency welfare centre which added to the cost but with the higher earthquake compliance code of IL4 the extra fundraising would be a sound investment into the future . We achieved our goal after many years hard work. It was a great community project with many volunteers involved during the 6 year project.
