A lorry fording the Jacobs River, South Westland, with a load of fat lambs from a nearby station. The lambs are taken by lorry to Ross and railed from there to the freezing works at Islington, near Christchurch, a total distance of about 300 miles. Another interesting topic illustrated in the photograph is the activity at the Jacobs River as work proceeds on the traffic bridge, on the left of the picture, which is to carry the new South Westland highway across the river. The structure showing on the right is the existing suspension foot-bridge.

Much of the livestock,timber,whitebait, and cheese from South Westland was carted to the railhead at Ross by NZR Road services trucks based at Harihari .I was born in the cottage on the hill behind the depot where Dad was the mechanic. in 1947.
