DescriptionWhile cleaning up a grave I saw this broken headstone with cruelly murdered on it so looked up to see what happen. I found John Donohue was hung at the Hokitika jail for the murder of James Gifford at at Maori Creek, now Maori Gully in 1884 near Dunganville. Giffords brother was at the hanging and as Donohue mounted the scaffold he yelled in a loud voice god save Ireland three times. Im fairly sure I read where he was the last man to be hanged at Hokitika.ContributorMoe Bowes

Interesting. I have the autobiography of Thomas Hill Chinn, called Pack Track to Highway. I read it about 30 years ago and remember it mentioning a murder at Maori Creek
