Molloy Bros Bedford Truck - loading Dobson slack with their TD 6 overloader.

About this image

DescriptionThis Boyd Molloy photo shows a tidy looking Bedford with Molloy Bros on the door. Thought to be loading Dobson slack with their TD 6 overloader.

Down on the farm in the Sth Westland we had an Allis Charmers HD7. It had a double cable drum and we believe had an overloader. Was fitted with a cable blade but all the pulleys were there for one of the mechanisms. We understand it had come from the Lime works in Ross. Undercarriage was in very poor condition and kept throwing tracks. It was scrapped in late 70's. Motor went into a fishing boat. Tracks and blade were adapted for land clearing work. We used the overhead structure for steel jobs on the farm. Winch was cut off and sold. Finally blew the back to bits with gelignite to dismantle and was scrapped to Dispatch Foundry.Map^[1]ContributorMoe Bowes

Magic history thanks for sharing love it ?

Great idea, especially on a crawler, or in a tight space.

Grant Klempel — Remember the same coal-loading arrangement Molloy Bros had set up at Kotuku rail siding, but with a Pelican loader.

Kerry Molloy — Yeah, Grant, but that loader was almost 100% devoted to loading lime railed from Ross for aerial topdressing at Bell Hill State Farm. IIRC, Murray Molloy lost the tip of a finger to that clamshell bucket! Peter Rowley, who owned Aerial Sowing and was one of their pilots, used to buzz their garage at Kotuku, or if it was lunchtime, fly over Mum and Dad’s place at Moana to let Dad know the super/lime bins were getting low at the strip. Peter eventually bought Mum and Dad’s place as a base for his pilots, but sadly it later burnt down. Peter himself had Joy and Arthur Coleman’s old place as a bach for years, as he was an avid fisherman. The late Ken Edens also flew a lot out of Bell Hill and Blair’s Block. Planes included the Auster, Piper Cub, Piper Pawnee and Fletcher, now known as the Cresco in NZ. The late Trevor Molloy posted a photo of a Fletcher loading at Bell Hill strip.

Grant Klempel — Hi Kerry, how are you keeping? Remember the days with you and Leo at Moana School. Now that you mention that history, it’s all coming back to memory. Remember the day well when Murray lost part of his finger. Spent a lot of time with Murray and the family in the early days. Hope this finds you all well.

Vern Pattinson — Remember those days from living in Dobson.

Gavin Waters — Yes, remember those days also. Worked when they became involved with North Canterbury Transport around 1979. Carried lime from Kotuku to Bell Hill State Farm for aerial topdressing, loaded with a Pelican loader at Kotuku rail siding. Good old days. A bit long in the tooth now for that.

Hamish Petrie — A diesel too — either a 300 or 330 Bedford.

Love that history ?

Nope, it's not Taupo Tce. We lived at the end of the road. Used to climb to the top and slide down on a piece of corrugated iron. Our coal bin was never empty ?

I remember the machine but I don’t recognise the background. It might be loading Dobson Slack, but it doesn’t look like Taupo Terrace or the Dobson straight where the big slack dumps were.
