DescriptionThis is my Grandfather Bill O’Malley aka “Possum Bill” (late of Ikamatua). He worked as a bushman for McInroe’s and also made pit props from logs like this for local mines. At other times he was a possum trapper, hence the nickname.

No, there is no connection to these O’Malleys as far as we know. The James O’Malley we descend from came to The West Coast from Westport, County Mayo, Ireland via the Victorian gold fields and Gabriel’s Gully in Central Otago. Bill O’Malley in this photo was his grandson.

My great grandmother was a Bridget O’Malley born in Westport Ireland in 1862,she came out to Westport NZ as a toddler in 1863 with her parents John and Barbara Moran O’Malley.Her brothers and one sister were born in Westport NZ,being John Joseph,John Micheal,James Patrick,Patrick and Barbara Mary O’Malley.Pretty sure they were tied up with pubs,Michael was at Cronadun,my gg grandmother was buried their.
