1870 and 1939.
Gasworks was built in 1870 and gas lighting of roadways in town begins. Coal was barged from the Brunner Mine
down into Blaketown Lagoon, then up Tidal Creek to the gasworks. The railway is now located where
the creek was. The church in the centre of the gap between the hills is where McDonalds fast foods is located on Tainui street today.Map^[1]ContributorTony Kokshoorn
