Wooden pegs. It was advised to boil them before use as they tended to leave a brown stain on clothes otherwise. Those pegs lasted for years.

I remember my Mum telling us that when they lived in Cobden in the forties that she always hung the washing out at night as it was too icy to do so in the early morning… sometimes the washing almost snapped as it was so frozen… guess that was Global Warming ?
