DescriptionThe stump of a newly felled 35-tonne matai spreads table-like before a South Westland farmer, Mr John Cowan, who was at the centre of a row over the logging of native timber on his property. The row hinged on what Mr Cowan considered unrealistic compensation being offered by the Government for the value of his land and timber. Yeah I remember that. He gave one of the forest and bird guys (one of my old high school teachers) a big Rev up on the news. He was allowed to do firewood instead so he set up opposite the DOC office down there to give them the shits.

Was allowed to cut it into firewood but not proper timber.

Thank god we have conservation otherwise there would be no native forest on the Coast left and that is part of the beauty and charm of the place. People come to see it and brings the tourists. How would you like it if there were no glaziers anymore, think about it. I used to work for the Forest Service myself and they were clear felling the forest then to plant radiata pine. Big burns of the forest after that.

typical of West Coasters many found a way around this. We as Maori were allowed to fell much of that timber so local farmers sold that timber to my Uncle Paul Wilson & he & his boys logged it for them. no one lost as far as I know. used the law against the govt which Uncle Helen did not like.
