DescriptionMrs Dawn Green, of Hokitika, surveys her wrecked whitebait gear and stand damaged in the flooding along Hokitika Beach this week. She has fished for whitebait for 30 years. Whitebaiters struggled to rescue equipment amid flood debris on West Coast beaches. Torrential rain on Tuesday night severely damaged most of the 70 registered stands on the Hokitika River. Nets, screens, huts, boats, power saws, trailers, gas bottles, and a motorcycle were swept away. Some fishers lost equipment valued at $2000. The flooding also disrupted traffic in South Westland and road closings meant the Haast hotel had 40 extra guests on Tuesday night.
