MOCKY BRERETON – KIWI #466
Today we farewell one of New Zealand rugby league’s great characters and one of the finest wingers to ever wear the Kiwi jersey.
Maurice “Mocky” Brereton Kiwi #466.
Our thoughts are with Mocky’s family, his friends, his old teammates and all those who had the privilege of knowing him.
Mocky was a West Coaster through and through, coming through the Greymouth Marist system and representing the West Coast as a teenager before making his New Zealand debut in 1969 against the touring Australians.
He would go on to become a record-breaking Canterbury player with Marist-Western Suburbs.

He was a determined, tough and prolific try-scoring winger who played during one of the most important periods in New Zealand rugby league history.
He was part of the famous 1971 Kiwis tour of Britain and France, scoring 11 tries in 20 tour matches. He was also on the field for the Kiwis' unforgettable 24–3 victory over Australia at Carlaw Park.
Away from rugby league, Mocky served his country and community as a New Zealand Police detective, remaining in the force for 25 years before retiring in 1995. His sporting achievements were recognised when he was named the New Zealand Police Sportsman of the Year in 1971.
After his playing days, Mocky continued giving back to the game, coaching Marist-Western Suburbs and later serving as the club's president.
I was lucky enough to catch up with Mocky at the Kiwi Reunion in Christchurch. That will be a memory I will always treasure.
Just yesterday, Dane O’Hara and I were talking about Mocky while discussing our upcoming Kiwi reunion and what these reunions really mean bringing old Kiwis, teammates and mates back together and remembering the people who made New Zealand rugby league so special.
Sadly, Mocky won't be there for the next one.
But he will certainly be there in spirit.
When we raise our glasses at the Kiwi reunion, we'll be having a beer for you, Mocky.
And I know your old mates will have plenty of stories to share.
From the West Coast to Canterbury, from the Police to the Kiwi jersey, Mocky Brereton left his mark on so many lives.
A true West Coast champion.
