I worked part-time in the bar at Kings Hotel, where Pat not only had a plaque on the wall but a special key on the till — “Pat’s Whiskey.” He drank enough to qualify for a generous discount.

Pat was an intelligent man and great company until two-thirds of the bottle was gone.

Pat never drove a car in his life and was a VIP at Greymouth Taxis.

Thank you for the wonderful conversations, Pat. You were one of life’s characters. RIP, my friend.

Bill Gardyne: Good bugger. Drank at the Kings back bar. He was a really nice guy.

John Greaney: He was also a great Marist man and would go for a rubdown before the game. His house was wall-to-wall newspapers. Thank God there was not a fire.

Worked at the Press office but was also sighted at the Grey River Argus. Yes, the Kings was his home — maybe his second home.

A learned man and a great reporter and League supporter.
