Richard Stevens: Yes, I remember that. We had the day off school.

Tania Hadley: I can remember that day. I was at Grey High School. Mum came to pick me up, etc., and there was a whole lot of us too.

Ivan Murray Wilson: Heard the cracks and bangs in the night and later at 5am, while hurtling along Alexander Street to the studio on the old 10-speed. A copper stepped out of the murk and gloom to stop me. Directed me back around onto Cowper Street. Oddly, the only building with lights on inside was Broadcasting House — it was in a nice line of sight from the perpetrator’s vantage point.

Graham Hay: I remember waking to the 7am news and hearing parts of Greymouth had been cordoned off due to a shooting. I was wondering whereabouts when I heard shots. Police had the road blocked at Alexander St and Thompson St. Tainui St was also blocked off. ????

Grant Richardson: Remember that, and I think the bonnet may still be in the old police station.

Kerri Duthie: I remember hearing “pop, pop” as I walked to the school bus, only to be sent home for the day. Exciting stuff back then, and how patient those cops were. Try this today and there’s no surrendering — cops shoot back now.
