Wonderful photo, but it's a stage coach, not a carriage - the leather thoroughbrace suspension and the body design confirms this. The movement in the right of the image indicates that they changing horses at a staging post.

Grant Taylor you can also see part of the harness gear on the ground in front of the horses ready for hitching the other horses.
