CommentsChristine Banks: They had the backbone to stand for what they thought was a threat to their family still living in Whataroa, so good on them. Sadly, these days, not many will risk friendships and income to stand for anything.

And as the saying goes, if you stand for nothing, you fall for everything.

In a working and free democracy, we need our ideas to be challenged.

Tom Belton: How wrong they were. The kotuku became the main thing that made Whataroa a place for tourists to stop.

Marg Iacoppi: They already lived in Greymouth, for heck’s sake. What makes humans think the world is to be plundered for their benefit? I so hope their great-grandchildren get the chance to know family, as our planet disappears.

John Flattery-Donohoe: Not long after then, say 10–12 years, DOC cut down all the branches over there nesting river down Whataroa.
