DescriptionMonteith's label, bottled by John Darwell at the Union Hotel, Greymouth. Darwell took over the license for the Herbert Street premises in late 1931 and died in late 1936 so that gives a pretty good idea of the age of this item, closer to the former date. Before he assumed management of the Union, he had been licensee of Dunollie Hotel and before that, Rapahoe Hotel.

Just to note that the John Darwell who died in 1936 was 82 years old and it was his son (of the same name) who operated the Union Hotel from Jan.1933 until about Dec.1936.
