Cowper Street house, Greymouth

About this image

DescriptionI'm searching for any information or photographs of our home (pictured below). Recent conversations have piqued my interest in finding out more about our home and its previous owners. Some have suggested that it may have been the brewery managers house. Historic council records are very limited but the original design was drawn up by a W M McDougall - Builder. The bungalow plans are marked as "For Mr H Miller". It was built in 1929 and we purchased it from my father-in-law who has owned it since the early 90s.

CommentsHamish Gordon: Check out the old Wise’s directories at the public library, which listed residents at each address in the 1920s. A good place to start.

Lauren Phillips: Hamish Gordon, thanks, Hamish! Sounds like today’s job.

Loretta Donnelly: I thought all the owners were listed on the CTs (Certificates of Title).

Ethel Hatin: You have the address, so you can go to the Government’s LINZ website and order records. You can also enter the address into electoral roll databases.

Deborah Maguigan: Is this in Cowper Street? If it is, I lived there in the late 1970s and early 1980s. My dad was the brewery manager!

Lauren Phillips: Deborah Maguigan, yes! 57 Cowper Street. I was speaking to the lovely lady at Grey Valley Couriers, and she mentioned our house being the brewery manager’s residence and that she used to babysit the children who lived here!

Mandy O’Sullivan: I’m pretty sure that before it was owned by NZ Breweries, it may have been Dr Logan’s house. His son Johnny was a boxer, and his daughter Judy was a bagpiper and the mother of Jane Darling and Kelly Swinburn, who both live locally. Mark Boland’s family, who live locally, lived there in the mid-1980s when his dad, Dave, managed DB. I may be wrong, but it was built around the same time as my parents’ home and had many of the same design features. Good luck with your research. It’s a beautiful home.

Murray Hay: Mandy O’Sullivan, correct about the Boland family living there. Mark definitely lives here still. DB must have owned it, as it sounds like at least a couple of brewery managers lived there. We painted it back in the late ’80s or ’90s, and again three years ago for Lauren, the current owner.

Lindy Loo: Hi Lauren, I’m doing the same thing for a 1920s house. I’m going to create a simple history book with old articles and a brief history of who has lived in the house.
