The bridge, opposite the Central Hotel, is where the Pioneer statue was originally located until shifted against the will of the majority. Every one past it going over the bridge to the station.

Used to ride over that bridge 6 mornings a week on my bike on my way to pick up Press newspapers from the morning railcar at the station. One morning my paper crate hit a wire strung across the bridge off ramp at waist height. I crashed but wasn't hurt. The convent girl boarders did it to get back at us paperboys who would sometimes wake them up by throwing gravel at their dorm windows from the bridge. Once Gordon Mackintosh rode off the ramp and ended up on the tracks as the railcar was approaching. (his brakes may have failed?) Gordon & bike, with other paperboys assisting, got out of the way before the slowing railcar arrived.

I would have only been 12 or 13 at the time. We hoped the girl boarders would be annoyed, get out of bed and come to the windows half naked and abuse us. The ploy often worked. It relieved the boredom when waiting for a railcar that was running late.

As one of two paper boys we would pickup the Grey Star off the railcar there then do the Hokitika deliveries as far as Arthurs town. The railway station Always had a nice smoky smell to it and Fred Stapleton was always there with a smile on his face.

Don't know about the afternoon deliveries Greg but I did the morning Press for four years. Your brother David was my spare boy if I ever needed time off. In the morning as well as the Press that myself and others picked up from the station there was the previous nights ChCh Star that the Boland boys delivered. One railways guy we nicknamed/called "Babalouie". He worked at the station back then and was around in the mornings. He was a good road cyclist. I have no idea of his real name.

Greg Mait I delivered the Grey Star for 6 months but it must have been later after the railcar stopped as I picked up the papers from Baird's store.

The station was where the Car park is now ,and the goods shed was where farmlands is with shunting tracks between The station platform was quite long went nearly across the stopped end of Stafford st with the other end roughly about opposite where the police station starts.

I was a paper boy starting late 1960's and and picked up the Press newspapers for delivery from that station of a morning until some time in 1972 when the railcars stopped and buses took over. Once the buses came we picked up the papers from the Road Services depot rather than the railway station. Lots of memories of the railway station and doing morning paper runs plus the railcars.

Friday night caught train at Takutai Station about 6.15pm home on last train about 10.30pm always sat in Guards van on cold winter night going home or sometimes up I engine with driver providing there were only a few on train. Great times and memories.
