A great tradition which thankfully carried on for several years. Great fun on the railcar, and an opportunity to meet new friends and families in ChCh.

Wow Great photo. Don't think us Catholic School kids traveled far. Disaster.... combined Catholic Primary school picnic at Punakaiki 1960..... god forbid some when off and raided a local property that had a apple tree.. After lots of "we are sorry" letters and monies sent to pay back for the apples stolen... Never another combined Catholic school picnic. Disgraced for ever. I personally think us townies were lead astray by those pupils from St Joseph's Convent School Runanga... !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great photo Don. School trips were against Papanui HS and Christchurch West when I was at GHS. Made some great friends through both "billeting" and on the sports field!

Margaret Elaine Sadler I don't remember about the girls but GTHS rugby and cricket played against Marist and they always gave us a run for our money. I can't recall many names but Tom O'Callaghan, Lex O'Brien and Graham Kennedy (actually a league man too), the Rathbuns, McGraths were some footballers of considerable prowess. Mark Beban, the Kennedy brothers from Palmerston St were top cricketers.
