The photograph of the plaque on the Eastern Tiphead was taken before M.G.Collins was removed from the crew list as he wasn,t a crew member. When the plaque was engraved and placed where it is now there was some confusion, and the name M.G. Collins somehow ended up being listed as a crew member. The second Mate was in fact M.G. Jenkins, he joined the Kaitawa while she was hove to off Westport, he had been taken on as a replacement for the Kaitawa,s Second Mate R. Oakton, who had to be returned to Westport, as he had become ill while the Kaitawa was passing Karamea. I was in Westport just a couple of weeks back and you can see where the name M.G.Collins has been removed from the crew list, no doubt some Westport residents would have noticed it too.
