Klondyke Corner 1860's, when it was known as Bealey.

This area was not called Klondyke in the earliest days but was called Bealey. The photo is from the 1860's when this area was called Bealey. It was part of the First Bealey Settlement and later re-named Klondyke Corner. The Bealey Settlement was shifted across the river because of it being a cold and frosty locality, but this happened decades before the original Bealey Settlement site became known as Klondyke Corner. the naming would have been contempory or after the Klondyke goldrush of the 1890's and likely follwed the naming of the road bridge the Klondyke Bridge.

Linda Reedy it got the name because it was such a cold place to try to build a settlement , not much sun in winter that's why the settlement was moved to the other side of the river

Does any one have a photo of the head stone of Herbert Felton ? , a 2 year old buried at Klondyke. Flat , head stone was taken in the late 1960,s the same week end the Arthur's Pass church was broken into ( stolen items were returned many years later

Fascinated by the state of the forest, cycling in Beech forest is quite dynamic and these old images indicate the normal state of a Beech forest as there were no foreign critters in the forests at that stage. Fascinating image. Not 100% on where it was taken

The loss of those young men was tragic. One of them a chap from England, my mother felt a particular responsibility for .... (his death, I mean) During WWll mum had become a penfriend with a young English woman; they shared letters and photographs. This woman's young son grew up, being fascinated by NZ; a fascination first started by the photos Mum sent to his mother. He finally got to NZ and was killed. Mum always went very quiet when we drove passed.

The Klondike Rush was 1898 so something must have been built there round that time? Klondike is in Canada,not Alaska.There was a strip of road between Nelson Creek and the Hochstetter turnoff always called the Dardanelles.It was a narrow hillside winding through and I was told that it went through in 1915 which was the year of Gallipoli so Klondyke would probably have been around 1900.Interesting to know?
