Rewanui
About this location
DescriptionRewanui was the most impressive of coal mines in the district during its time. Rewanui was situated in an inaccessible valley in the Paparoa Ranges on the West Coast, South Island. The settlers living at Rewanui had to put up with disadvantages. There was comparative isolation, no flat land, high rainfall, no shops and physical difficulty in bringing supplies to homes. The soil was poor and prone to slipping.
A railway to Rewanui from Greymouth was usable by May 1912. Socially Rewanui settlement began to decline when families moved away to Runanga or Dunollie after 1935. The last family to leave Rewanui left in 1988 after living there for more than fifty years.
