What an amazing photo of the settlement. We need to be so thankful to our forebears who worked hard, built homes (buildings code? No Insulation and double glazing, no running water or sewerage system) in such difficult conditions, no tar sealed roads raised families and made the most if what they had. Perhaps we need to look back and be very thankful for what we gave today.

My grandfather came out from the UK to Burnetts face , I asked him why he would he come all this way and choose to live in such a desolate place up on the Denniston plateau , his reply was it was much better to live there than the mining town in the UK he had just come from .

Found this on a non-secure site, I just realized as I copied this that I was on such a site. Always worries me! The No Town Project I think it was called.
"Coal was discovered north of Westport on Mt Rochfort in 1859, but it wasn’t until 1878 that a company raised enough money to begin to extract it. The town of Denniston was established at the top of the famous ‘incline’, a steeply graded incline railway which carried the coal down the hill. The community of Burnett's Face was established in 1886, with the last resident leaving in 1956. With its own school, two hotels, a bakery, three general stores, a butchery, and a fancy goods shop, Burnett's Face was a thriving community with a population of 398 in 1926. Today no buildings remain on the site. For further reading see the Friends of the Hill website."

Pity the site can't be linked as it contained photos taken in 2013 I think it was....everything had gone back to the 'bush'.
