In 1866 this hotel was in Revell St, = the proprietor was Phineas Solomon owner of quite a few businesses. I was unable to get the location - it appears to be on a corner. Solomon was a leading Jewish businessman, who also owned the Cafe de Paris.

Glenn Johnston This pub was on the seaward side of Revell Street nearly opposite the end of Weld Street. i.e. Where Preston's building now houses Postie Plus.

Ronald John Amberger My grandfather Philip Amberger had a plumbing shop on Revell St, in this era. Has anyone any info or photos of this gentleman and his business?

Glenn Johnston Are you aware that Philip Amberger gets a short write up in the Encyclopedia of NZ 1906? A tinsmith , gas fitter and general iron monger. Came out to NZ in 1870, formerly employed by W Heinz etc. It contains detail about the size of workshop and showroom and says he employed four people.

John Rosanowski It was in the "Rose and Shamrock" that the foursome which made up the Burgess-Kelly gang - killers of George Dobson and the Maungatapu murderers - was formed. Their "fence," Phillip Levy, regularly played euche there.
