DescriptionThe Dredge Mawhera.

The dredge kept the wharf berths clear of gravel,and helped prevent serious flooding of the town, by lowering the riverbed. When it was working the noise was heard all over Greymouth and Cobden.

From Brian Mc Intyre..The bucket dredge Mawhera was a real identity on the Grey River during my childhood around the 1950s As a child I along with other children who waited expectantly for the hopper to be full of the tailings from the river bed were invited aboard by Captain Harle for a trip out over the bar to where he would dump his load. Us kids would feel the vessel lurch upwards from the released weight.
