DescriptionThis magnificent photograph which would be pre 1958 with the Opera House at right also shows a wonderful record of the businesses and buildings that are now long gone.

At left on the corner of Chapel St we have Frank Bell's milk bar and next to that McGlashan's Motor Garage with one of their buses that serviced the Cobden area parked on the wrong side of the road. You can see the petrol pumps at the front of the building where that person is walking along and that was where I stood with my father while the Opera House burned to the ground on the 8th of February 1958 oblivious to the danger of an explosion. Then we have Convent Lane.

I am unsure what the next smaller building with the black car outside was, but next door was the Masonic Lodge. Then there was the Sisters of Mercy's Convent with its big concrete wall across the street boundary. Then we have the Butter Factory which incidentally was painted cream in colour. There was then a house set back from the street and then the house on the corner housed Dr Dallas' surgery and I lived just around the corner at number 9 Puketahi Street.Date of PhotoPrior to 1958Map^[1]Contributor Brian McIntyre
