Was a complete shock but my dad loved being a pilot and was a very experienced pilot. He was such a generous and kind person. I would of liked to visit the crash site one day.

DescriptionOn 16 October 1993, MIL MI-8T helicopter YS-1005P, went out of control and broke up while in cruise flight. An uncommanded yaw led to a pitch excursion severe enough for the main rotor to strike and sever the tail boom. The helicopter's three occupants were killed in the accident. The precise cause of the uncommanded yaw could not be determined.

I was in the first logging crew, hookers. With brent Gregory, John tainui, craig hiha. Etc the work was hard kept us fit running around in the bush with strops to hook to the chopper.

Very much the down wash from the chopper was very strong you had to watch out for dead limbs on the tops of the trees, that could be widow makers..

Was selective logging for us . At the time they said that flying in the rain could of stressed the prop blades from memory

It was a nice Kowhitirangi morning, we lived in the valley then and had a phone call from a news source in Wellington asking about it, that was the first we knew that it had crashed.

We were up Blue Spur getting a trailer load of wood and 1 of those choppets landed not far from us. My ex asked the pilot if my 2 boys could look thru the chopper. It was huge inside. Not long after that we heard that 1 chopper had crashed killing all 3 people on board. Thanks for letting my boys look thru the chopper. RIP guys

The day before the tragedy the chopper was parked in a paddock just south of Ross on Chinn's farm. We asked the men could we bring our four boys over to have a look. The men were amazing. They gave us a thorough tour through the machine, letting the kids sit in the pilot seat with headphones on, and were very generous with their time. It was unbelievable that the next day their lives had been taken in a country far from their own homes, and in such horrific circumstances. They were the best of the best. We hope their families realise how giving and generous they were to us locals, and how happy and relaxed they were the day before their accident. We share your grief.
