DescriptionWith me now living in Nelson in the mid 60s and with a young family, my boys had hardly seen a train or railcar in real life as Nelson had no railway, so it was always a novelty to take a ride on the rails.
I would drop them off at the Greymouth Railway Station with their mother and see them off. I would then take my car to Stillwater to meet them and I would not get there far ahead of them either. I tried to work it so that I was driving below the railway line just after the Kiwi tunnel (which is no longer there) so that the boys could see me below them. When they got off the railcar at Stillwater they were fair buzzing with excitement.
A childhood memory that remains with them now, some thirty plus years later.ContributorBrian McIntyreDate of story eventsapprox 1972Map[1]
