The Bell Hill School opened in 1922 with a roll of 7 pupils. The teacher in charge when it opened was Mr W A Rowe. Canterbury Education Board sources give conflicting dates for the closing of the school but it is believed to be 1954. The remaining pupils of 4 or 5 and the teacher Mr Jarden transferred to Rotomanu School.
