DescriptionThose steam driven cranes were replaced by electric cranes ( as presently (2) on wharf today mid 50's and ships like the Poolta (USSCo) behind the cranes foreground were replaced by the K class colliers....late 40's early 50's. The likes of Kokiri, Kaiapoi. Kaitangata, Kaitawa, Kawatiri, Konui so me thinks perhaps early to mid 40's for this picture or could even be earlier.

The Poolta saw service from 1925 until 1952.. when sold USSco records. The K class colliers built and into service 1948 and 49 the Kokiri in 1951.

Good photo. We lived in the last seaward house in Larsen St. Cape Foulwind. The coal ships during large storms would shelter in the lee of the Steeples. Sometimes they would be there for days. We had a pair of large binoculars and we would watch the ships. Seeing your photo bought back memories of the K boats.

I remember the Kaitawa she was lost off the west coast off Northland would it have been on the radio news

I remember one of those cranes. When the first of the big cranes was assembled, the ones in the photo started going. Before long there was only the big ones.
