DescriptionGrey District Mayor Barry Dallas.
Dallas, a general practitioner, served as mayor of Greymouth from 1966 to 1968, and later from 1980 until his unexpected death in 1992. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire for services to local government and the community in the 1990 New Year Honours, and was also awarded the New Zealand 1990 Commemoration Medal.
Dallas stood as an independent candidate for the Westland electorate in 1969; and in 1972 and 1975 for the replacement West Coast electorate. He finished second behind the incumbent Paddy Blanchfield in all three elections; standing as an independent candidate in 1972, and as the National candidate in 1975. In 1969 he trailed Blanchfield by only 1879 votes. In 1972 the majority for Blanchfield was 4242, and in 1975 it was 2401.

Jenny Lennan This great man walked me down the isle to be married even spent some of our honeymoon staying with him at Nine Mile. Never got to say goodbye to him as I was overseas when he passed away. Emma went to his grave when she was in NZ last time but she couldn't find Nana's grave
Diane Baird One of our best friends. Dave was his helper when he tried for Parliament. I was his Practice Nurse and we worked together for many years at Grey Hospital in the OT. Great historian re the Coast. Gave me many insights into my family history. A true friend never forgotten. We often reminisce about those days.
Jenny Lennan Diane Baird, I'm Cathy cousin, she lives in Hamilton and has done so for many years now, actually got a email from her last week and is coming to Aussie this time next year, can't wait to see her again, we are the same age and used to have some great times together in Greymouth
Tom Esta Richardson I worked for Jim Eakin in the same office as Joan.When your dad first got Morgan we would look after him, he would be under the desk chewing our shoes as we would be talking to patients.I had great times with your Dad,he took me in his ute during one of the floods.All decked out in gumboots we went around helping others,he was a great man.

Lorraine O'Donoghue Barry Dallas was certainly a man for the coast. He saved a lot of properties when he rushed in and started the floodwall. I always thought the wall should've been named after him.

Peter Westwood Susan McPherson my eldest daughter also has Dallas as middle name.I recall she got bitted by a dog at Puni one sunday, we set off for the hosp and comming past Barrys place at 10 mile here he was cutting the lawn so in we went, she was all fixed up there and then without any fuss. A very fine Gentleman.
Teri-anne Bergin Barry was a great friend and neighbour of my grandparents Doug & Nola Aitken, and parents (Shona Bell & David Bell) .... this photo is of Barry dressed as Santa (kissing my grandfather lol) at our family reunion in the late 70's. I remember him being given a bottle of beer, then dropping it on the concrete, because one of my cousins had whispered in his ear *santa your fly is undone*
Sandra Geddes Yes he was a real coast icon!
Laurie Anisy Barry was one of the driving forces in the Civic Centre building.As a young chap, helped him and a lot of the Lions pull the old house down before building started. He would be so sad, that it is to be replaced.
William Albert Whitehead He entertained my 1984 schoolboy kiwis and boys loved it when his dog cocked its leg on his leg.
Jill Jones Great Doctor. My daughter Jody .He saved her then always followed up visits.
Glenda Bishop Our family doctor for years. Lovely man.
Jill Kramer Dr. Dallas delivered me and was our family doctor. In one of those "small world" moments, I was in Salt Lake City a few years ago and amazingly met his granddaughter.
