Moe Bowes.."Recently I found the very first Hunter mine. When I was looking for information I found where one of the miners had been killed there in 1938.

Albert Lewis Smithson had worked for the West Stanley mine in Durham.On Feb 16th 1909,young Albert couldn`t work with a sore hand. You were sacked if you missed work,so his 18 yr old brother John took his place,and was one of 168 killed in the West Stanley mine explosion that day.In 1926 Albert and his Friend Tommy Nicholson left for NZ.The Smithsons went first to Kotuku,then Siberia at Rewanui. They were quick to move to Dunollie and build to houses both still there.Tommy had a job at Rewanui.On the 20 September,1938 Tommy,a trucker, had his spine fractured while having his lunch in Rewanui,he died in hospital on 19th of December that year. His brother in law,Albert Smithson was in a explosion while checking Hunter mine before the men went in.He died 24 days later with burns he received.Both were 45 and Smithson had 5 kids.He died on what was to be his sons John`s wedding day.They were two young friends who married two sisters, and both died around Xmas 1938 as a result of injuries sustained in the mines."
