At the end of the miners shift as the train rolled into the riverside station the miners would as a group jump off and running to a stop along the platform and either off to their car or across Mawhera Quay to the Royal or Railway hotels

Brian McIntyre the Dobson miners pub was the Commercial.. i remember that.. cos Mum used to get mad at Dad for going to the pub and she would send us up there to tell him to come home

I used to go to the Dunollie station regularly at 8am to meet my dad off the train after his dogwatch shift

The train didn’t stop at the Cobden side all the miners had to jump off the moving train. There was a bit of a game played where you would jump off the train at the last possible moment so the guy behind you didn’t have time to get off because he would hit the sides of the rail bridge. I ended up having to walk back from Greymouth a couple of times but I made a couple of others do it too. I wonder what workplace health and safety would say about it now.Roger O'Regan
