DescriptionSeven Mile creek near the middle brake was considered the best starting point for Liverpool No.2. That would allow the top half of the rope road from Liverpool No.1 to be discontinued. The middle brake would be much more accessible to workers from Dunollie and Runanga A 1,120 metre stone drive began in 1919 and was completed in 1922. By 1925 the Morgan seam intersected 9 metres of good quality coal 500 metres south of the No.1 mine workings. Many other seams followed ensuring the mines future and comfirming the decision made to embark on the major development. A new haulage system was installed, crossing Seven Mile creek to the mine entrance. More buildings sprouted at Middle Brake, the lower rope road was upgraded and screens at the bins were improved to handle up to 900 Tons a day. In 1926 No.2 eclipsed No.1 as top producer. Liverpool No.3 commenced in 1960 producing high quality coal through to closure in 1984. The following photos are at Middle Brake and are a tribute to all hands who lived and worked on the Rewanui incline from Dunollie all the way up to Siberia in the clouds. Tony Kokshoorn.

We have marked the track from the Rewanui Bridge at the top of the old railway incline all the way up to Middle Brake and the Liverpool Number Two coalmine. Travel by bike or walk from Dunollie along the old railway all the way to the top of the Rewanui Incline. Stay on the true left of seven mile creek all the way to the wooden bridge at the top of the Incline, True Left or Right of a river is the Direction the river flows. After crossing the bridge follow the red and white tape for approximately fifteen minutes then enter the creek bed for one hundred metres following the painted arrows then red tape will lead you back onto the track up to Middle Brake. From the Rewanui wooden bridge it is approximately forty minutes to Middle Brake then another thirty minutes to the coal mine via the Viaduct across Seven mile creek. It is well marked and I would class it as a moderate walk with only small hard areas. If in difficulty descend by staying on the True Right hand side of the creek as it flows back down to the Top of the Rewanui railway incline then back down to Dunollie.
