I remember seeing this unit back in the day . A converted Land Rover to which rail wheels were fitted. As one could see the old one didn't cut it .

when i worked for the railways as a station at Rewanui we had to start up the land rover once a week and drive up to the coal bins and back to keep the battery charged up. it was strange at the first few times driving and not having to use the steering wheel

That vehicle now is at Auckland at MOTAT. It needs to be returned to Runanga and displayed as a visitor attraction.

I remember being with a bunch of kids playing at the Dunollie station when they bought a badly injured minor down on this….I vaguely remember his surname as Baughan or Borne or some such….a sight I have never forgotten all those 60 years ago now

I went up to Rewanui to remove the gearbox several times to repair it as it used to seize up after reversing all the way back from Dunollie I also had to repair it after a train accidently shunted some wagons into the siding it was park at
