DescriptionLast year we marked out the track from the top of the Rewanui Incline to Middle Brake No.2 coalmine. Last week we completed marking from Middle Brake all the way up to Siberia No.1 coalmine. The mines were also known as Liverpool 1,2,and 3. The walk is a day trip starting a few hundred metres north of DUNOLLIE HOTEL at the gated access road to the Rewanui incline. From here cycle the public access route for 40 minutes or walk one hour 15 minutes to the top of the railway incline reaching Rewanui No. 3 mine at the top of the valley.
Cross the old wooden bridge over Seven Mile Creek. Follow the markers by foot for a few hundred metres then entre the Seven Mile Creek bed for 100 metres. Exit the creek on the same side that you entered.( TRUE RIGHT ). Continue a steep climb to MIDDLE BRAKE and Liverpool No.2 Coalmine which is a spectacular area of coal mining heritage. This section of the walk from the bridge to Middle brake takes approx. 40 minutes. From Middle Brake follow the markers across the Seven Mile Creek Viaduct to the stables then on to Liverpool No.2 coalmine. Return the same way you came from Middle Brake. Allow 30 minutes there and 30 minutes return.
To continue the walk to SIBERIA No.1 Coalmine and Tops follow the YELLOW markers from Middle Brake over a hard walk for approx. 0ne Hour 30 Minutes to Siberia and onto the tops at Cracker Hut close to where the open cast mining is presently operating.
My suggestion is that the best walk is from Dunollie to the Middle Brake and No.2 coalmine where the majority of the heritage is to be found. Very few buildings remain on the Siberia section.
Stay within sight of the markers and always stay within 50 metres of the TRUE RIGHT of Seven Mile Creek( true right is the right hand side coming down a river). You will cross Seven Mile Creek only 2 times which is entering not long after crossing the bridge up to Middle Brake and where the viaduct crosses to the stables. That trackwork had already been done by Hutty and myself plus additional marking and trackwork elsewhere in the area. Admittedly it was mainly just to pilot track standard though better in places so it should have been easy to follow which was our intention. We were just following in the footsteps of Rewanui Preservation Society volunteers from soon after Liverpool Mine closed so it is good to see further volunteer workers keeping some of these tracks open. I did numerous solo trips up there over the years and a number with Hutty and seldom did we bump in to anyone except on the old incline formation. Cyril Hector and Moe Bowes were regularly poking around though and I did get to meet them. Greater Rewanui area is great place to explore. I have a wealth of memories plus a good smattering of photos of the area a few of which have been posted here. Was back in the area fairly recently climbing Mt Davy from Rewanui again.
