DescriptionThe mine in the east bank of Tararu Creek produced more anxiety than coal in the early years. After about 140m of driving, a thick seam of excellent quality gave way to dirt bands, while drives north revealed coal of good quality and medium hardness, but limited quantity.
In 1912-13 a stone drive about 350m south- eastward to the main branch of Seven Mile Creek failed to locate anything of great value.
Boring operations in 1913-14, under the guidance of P G Morgan, Director of Geological Survey, at last defined what had been hoped for a seam of more than 5m average thickness and superior quality extending over a proved area of about 50 hectares north-east of the Seven Mile Creek forks.
