DescriptionThe Liverpool Mine is 20 kilometres north-east of Greymouth. along the former Rewanui railway line. My Grandfather & Great Grandfather work together there.
Four men were killed in the mine up until 1926, with Andrew Baker (47) in a fall of coal, and John Kennedy (70) crushed while transporting coal to the boiler-house, mentioned. William Timlin (55) in 1934, William Patrick Kennedy (57) in 1939, and Michael Granich (50) in 1942, were killed, all in falls of coal.Map^[1]ContributorGH Builders

I walked up to there in February. The mine portal (entrance) has been destroyed by a huge landslide / rockfall. Two boulders the size of houses came down and did the damage. They're now lying in Seven Mile Creek below the old mine entrance.
There's still a lot of machinery and remains of buildings up there.
An amazing amount of very cleverly designed and built infrastructure to get the coal out and down to the wharf.

That’s so sad hearing about those deaths. The miners are/were marvellous men working in difficult conditions. What hard workers.

From what I understand they are a Davies Safety Lamp and replaced the Canary that swung of its perch when gas was present.

Bert Chandler yes they have a gauze panel that allows a restricted air flow,testing for methane the wick is lowered and gas if present shows as a cone above flame.Airflow prevents explosion as flame is contained.Stare Coal ones have a padlock on so the body cannot be removed,if it goes out,a replacement from surface is needed.
Methane is lighter than air,and rises to roof.When testing the lamp is held up as close to roof as possible.

John Stuart great to know how they worked, I assume they would keep the lamp with the miners, but someone's going to watch it all the time.

Bert Chandler The deputies carried them as they tested for gas before firing shots.Plus the Underviewer carried one on inspections every day. Could smell them coming as they used COALoil as fuel,not Kerosene. While loading the shots,Deputies hung the lamp on a water or air pipe.

Yes for sure, I can remember dad tinkering with one on the kitchen table. I still have one of his carbide lamps, straight from the coal face, dents and all, memories all right.
